Evanston continued their early season success, sweeping Vernon Hills seven matches to zero in a CSL crossover match.

In their seven matches on the day, the Wildkits didn’t drop a single set, to improving their overall record to 6-0.

Evanston coach Joyce Anderson was extremely pleased with her teams effort on the day: “The girls right now are playing very confidently, which is what I want to see. Loose and confident putting away the easy ones and taking the points when they need them.”

The most the most notable match of the day featured last years singles runner up Anastasia Goncharova.

Goncharova returns a backhand

Goncharova, who recently returned from a knee injury, dispatched her opponent in straight sets, while not dropping a single game 6-0, 6-0.

Despite the decisive victory, Goncharova still found things to work on to continuously improve her game.

“I take all my matches seriously, I go through the same routine no matter who I’m playing,” said Goncharova.

“I just wanted to work on my stuff. I worked a lot on my serve and volleying today, which is something that I’ve been working on a lot, so this gave me an opportunity to utilize that aspect of my game.”

Not only, did Goncharova work on her physical game, but she has also improved her focus and mental toughness, something she admitted to struggling with in the past.

The doubles tandem of Conner and Hedges celebrate a point

The other game of note was the doubles one match. The Evanston duo of Margot Conner and Annie Hedges defeated their opponents 6-3, 6-1, which really impressed coach Anderson.

“They played a really good team and put them away very easily, 6-3, 6-1 and that shows they have a lot of potential. I expect them to move on and qualify for state.”
