Fremd holds off Waukegan for double overtime victory

The fans at Wheeling received a late holiday present as the Fremd and Waukegan played an extra quarter of basketball on Thursday as the Vikings used a 7-0 run at the start of the second overtime to defeat the Bulldogs 66-60 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Wheeling Hardwood Classic.

Fremd lead for most of regulation as Waukegan overcame a seven point deficiet with four minutes to go capped off by a three pointer by Andre White Jr. to tie the game at 50 with 11 seconds to go.  Fremd’s last attempt fell short and the game went to overtime.

In the first overtime Waukegan jumped out to a four point lead but the Vikings fought their way back to send the game to a second overtime tied at 54.  Fremd controlled the second extra frame thanks to a three from the corner by senior guard Tim Carlisle and some excellent team free throw shooting, finishing off the bulldogs 66-60.

Fremd was led in by Kayman Hopkins double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds and Carlisle’s 15 points.  Waukegan’s Andre White Jr. led all scores with 20 points.

Fremd will face Glenbrook South at 7:15 on Friday in the night’s first quarterfinal matchup and Waukegan will square off against Prospect at 3:45 PM in the consolation bracket.

Glenbrook South cruises to easy win over Prospect

The second championship game provided less drama as the Glenbrook South Titans led from start to finish defeating the Prospect Knights 68-39.  The Titans got off to a fast start as Dom Martinelli scored 11 of his game high 32 points in the first quarter opening up a 16-12 lead. Prospect struggled from behind the arc in the first half shooting only 1 for 8 and ere held to only four points in the second quarter as GBS extended the lead to 34-16.  

Prospect made a run early in the third quarter cutting the lead to 11 before GBS rattled off a quick seven points after a three pointer by Will King (8 points, 10 assists) and for more points from Martinelli.  GBS controlled the fourth quarter outscoring the Knights 21-6 for an impressive victory.
