Illinois Preps Insider’s girls basketball top-20: 2020-21 week one

We saw something we will probably never see again at the high school level, and that is a team going 6-0 in a single week.

Loyola had an incredible week, winning six games in seven days, and three of those teams are in the top-20. That’s a pretty incredible feat no matter how good of a squad you have.

Another team that really impressed me was Stevenson, most here probably know about their junior duo in Simone Sawyer and Ava Bardic, but they have two impressive freshman in Kendell Williams and Emory Klatt.

Of course, there’s always one team that we seem to overlook, and that team was Mother McAuley, two double digit wins against Fenwick is impressive.

I don’t want to sound alarm bells after just one week of a season we just found out about, so there will be a little leeway this week which is why you’ll see some sub-.500 teams still in here.

Sorry York, I don’t usually make special mentions, bu it’s a pandemic season so who cares? I promise if this was a normal season you would be comfortably in the top-20.

Team records are probably wrong, please correct me if they are (kindly please).

1 Simeon (0-0) 1

CPS starts up again this week

2. Hersey (3-0) 2

Really impressive in their first week. Mary Kate Fahey makes that offense go

3. Marist (0-0) 3

Off of COVID protocol, jump right into it with Iggy and Bolingbrook

4. Kenwood (0-0) 4

See Simeon

5. Fremd (2-0) 5

Easy-going opening week for the defending champs

6. Bolingbrook (3-0) 7

Big test coming up against Marist

7. Loyola (6-0) 11

A 6-0 start is incredibly impressive

8. Stevenson (3-0) 9

The freshman came to play

9. Homewood-Flossmoor (2-0) 6

Not having Grace Hall will be tough, but Alyssa Latham is supremely talented

10. Benet (2-0) 13

Lenee Beaumont can play

11. Libertyville (2-2) 8

Tough opening opponents should set them up well for the later season

12. Maine South (0-0) 12

COVID protocal

13. Mother McAuley (3-1) NR

Really impressive week for the Mighty Macs.

14. Naperville North (3-0) 15

Schedule will ramp up soon

15. Evanston (2-0) 16

Wins against Maine West are always impressive

16. Burlington Central (3-0) 18

Solid start for the Rockets

17. Nazareth (2-0) 20

There will be growing pains, but 2-0 is 2-0

18. Marian Catholic (2-2) 19

No shame in losing to Loyola and Benet

19. Fenwick (0-2) 10

Will look to bounce back against Montini

20. Lincoln-Way West (1-1) 14

Losing three starters is never easy
