Even with all the potential distractions, such as a potential matchup with St. Francis Loyola managed to cut through the St. Ignatius defense and the wind, for an important 2-0 win to keep them within reach of a GCAC conference title.
Despite the constant lineup flux, the opportunities given to different players have started to pay off for Loyola, as the Ramblers easily handled Niles North 25-14, 25-18 to improve to 8-6 on the season.
With their 57-46 win over Loyola, Maine West won their second consecutive sectional championship, something that hasn’t been done at the school since the 1992 and 1993 seasons.
Time and time again, ranked teams have had head scratching losses, and top seeds have bowed without even winning a regional, but Maine West (29-1) and Loyola (25-5) have overcome those troubling odds to set up a much anticipated matchup between two top-10 teams.
