Illinois Preps Insider’s girls basketball top-20: Week one

IMG_0700

Hope everybody enjoyed their first week of the season, there have been some pretty interesting results already.

The first couple weeks of rankings are a bit tricky, on one hand you don’t want to drop teams for slow starts because it is still very early, but on the other hand you also want to recognize those teams who have gotten off to fast starts.

I tend to put more weight into individual wins and losses usually after the Thanksgiving tournaments because every team has had a chance to get acclimated, but there were still some pretty significant movements this week.

With all of that being said, lets jump into it.

1. Whitney Young (0-0) 1

First game not until 11/24

2. Benet (3-0) 2

Three very solid wins, including one over St. Ignatius

3. Evanston (3-0) 3

Grind them out victory’s with limited minutes from Henning and Holmes

4. Fremd (3-0) 4

First big test coming up against Rolling Meadows

5. Loyola (2-0) 5

Defense looks excellent, offense will come around

6. Marist (2-0) 6

Untested the first week of the season. Schedule will get tougher

7. Maine West (3-0) 7

Showdown with Evanston upcoming

8. Kenwood (2-0) 9

Rolling through their early competition

9. Nazareth (4-0) 13

Great win against Montini, Annie Stritzel in midseason form

10. Mother McAuley (2-0) 10

Closer game than expected against Libertyville

11. Simeon (1-0) 14

Nice statement win over Bolingbrook. If Morrow comes back this season, watch out…

12. Montini (3-1) 8

Close loss against Nazareth isn’t the end of the world, but the injury to Sam Mitchell is very concerning

13. St. Ignatius (2-1) 16

Only team to lose and move up. Hung with Benet for 3 quarters, rolled through their other games, and Molly Gannon surpasses 1,000 points

14. Bolingbrook (0-1) 11

Near epic comeback against Simeon fell just short

15. Marshall (2-0) 16

Schedule wont ramp up until Christmas time

16. Lincoln-Way West (2-1) 11

Will look to regroup after disappointing loss against Stagg

17. Rolling Meadows (4-0) NR

Tremendous defensive pressure and excellent guard depth

18. Lake Forest (3-0) 18

Balanced attack led by Douglass has the Scouts off to a great start

19. Lake Zurich (3-1) 17

Couldn’t overcome slow start against Meadows

20. New Trier (3-0) NR

Teri Rogers gets win number 500. So long as she’s at New Trier, the Trevians will always be competitive.

    • Not yet. They’ve started out the season tremendously well but they’re still extremely young. Will get a little better of an idea about them after York, and a much better idea after Naz.

  1. LWW loss to Stagg was not disappointing, but they ran into a good Charger squad with two up and coming freshman playing major minutes. Going to catch a lot of teams off guard this year
